Course descriptions

There are 2 Keeping children safe in organisations courses available:

  • Child Safe eLearning - Keeping children safe in organisations
  • SAFESpace eLearning - Keeping children safe in organisations in disability sector

Both courses have these units in common:

  • Introduction - The background and rationale for becoming a child safe organisation.
  • Risk management theories - The importance of risk management, steps to reduce the likelihood of a child being harmed and the different forms of harm.  
  • Identifying grooming - Why people use grooming, recognising many grooming behaviours and to understand the difference between poor professional conduct and grooming.
  • Risk management strategies - Strategies to minimise risk of harm to children, ways to determine the likelihood of risk occurring, and effective risk management.  
  • Prevention methods - Situational prevention, rational choice theory, routine activity theory and practical things to do to reduce opportunities for offending.  
  • Understanding motivations to offend - The steps offenders go through to commit abuse of children, how situational prevention techniques can prevent or lessen abuse, and the different kinds of offenders.
  • Policies and procedures - The importance of having child safe policies, child safe policy development and the different kinds of child safe policies.
  • Organisational culture - Good organisational culture and governance and how they keep children safe, how to follow policies as a worker or a leader, further training and continuous improvement.
  • Reporting allegations and incidents - What needs to be reported, where it needs to be reported, what should take place after an allegation is made and which people have legal obligations to report.
  • Working with Children Check - The purpose of the Working With Children Check, who it applies to, how employers verify the WWCC number, WWCC status changes and penalties for employers.
  • Recruitment processes - How role descriptions, interview questions, an interview panel, reference checking, on-going training and support keeps an organisation child safe.  

The SAFESpace course for the disability sector also includes:

  • Examples relevant to the disability sector
  • Restrictive practice - guidelines for its use and the precursors and documentation that needs to be in place before restrictive practice can be used.
