Manage risks

Heads of relevant entities are required to have systems in place to prevent reportable conduct within their organisation. An integral component of complying with this requirement is identifying potential risks to children and taking steps to manage any identified risks. Risk management involves taking steps to reduce the likelihood or severity of potential risks from occurring.

All children are vulnerable, simply by virtue of being children. However, some children will be more or less vulnerable at different times and in different circumstances. For example, the risks children may face in their home or social environment are different from the risks they may face in an organisational setting. When assessing and managing the potential risks to children in an organisation, the assessment must consider the environmental factors relevant to the particular organisation. Much of the child abuse that takes place in organisations is situational and preventable.

Managing risk after a reportable allegation is made

Some entities and individuals can feel overwhelmed when a reportable allegation is made against a worker in their organisation.

Having a risk management protocol in place, which includes what actions need to be taken if a reportable allegation is made, will assist the entity and its employees to properly respond.

In the event of a reportable allegation, an immediate risk assessment will also help to identify, avoid or minimise further risks to:

  • any child who is the alleged victim
  • other children with whom the worker may have contact
  • the worker against whom the allegation has been made
  • the employing entity
  • the proper investigation of the allegation.
